Anti Casino Group MichGO Determined to Stop Wayland Casino

On February 23, 2007, MichGO and other anti-casino organizations petitioned the judge to block the federal government from placing some land under federal trust that will be the site of the Wayland Township Casino. The petition of the group followed the ruling of the US District Court Judge located in Washington, D.C., which set aside the lawsuit of the Michigan Gambling Opposition against the US Department of Interior.

MichGO filed a suit against the federal government for placing the land under federal trust for the Gun Lake Band of Potawatomi Indians, which in turn, is the site where the Gun Lake Band will build their gambling casino. According to MichGO spokesman, John Helmholdt, MichGO is hoping to achieve a federal restraining order to block the plans of the tribe.

Gun Lake Band Tribe Spokesman, James Nye, said that he is not expecting any injunction until the land is taken under trust because the process can take many days. The Gun Lake Band Tribe, which has 304 members, are also known as the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band. They want to put about 146 acres of land under federal trust.

They received recognition from the federal government back in 1999. They already spoke with the Station Casino Incorporated from Las Vegas about managing the casino. The Gun Lake Band Tribe is also currently planning to change their Ampro Factory into a 163,000 sq ft establishment, which will employ around 1,800 people.

Michigan Governor, Jennifer Granholm, has already expressed interest in discussing a gaming compact with the tribe. Both the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Rapids led group against the casino have supported the MichGO group from Dorr in blocking the project.
