Tuscarawas County Ready to Gamble

Tuscarawas residents go out on weekends and in bus loads, they go to Las Vegas. The question now is when will be gambling can ever be legal in Tuscarawas County. As the state rules, any kind of gambling outside from charity events and the Ohio lottery is considered illegal in Tuscarawas.

Executive director of the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dee Grossman-Tasker, says that there is proposal to amend an Ohio law to make gambling legal. According to him, the proposal came from the Learn and Earn folks and the issue does not have anything to do with the claims for lands or any American-Indian tribal groups. The issue will appear on the November ballot and it is called as the Learn and Earn. And this proposal is popularly known as Education Yes because thirty percent of the profits will fund different educational projects and scholarships.

If the proposal will be passed, the Ohio's seven major race tracks will be allowed to house slot machines.

Thistledown at North Randall, east of Cleveland is one of the major race tracks in Ohio but the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds at Dover is not considered a major race track.

By the year 2010, the local residents in the counties can vote to have an expansion of table games like poker, blackjack and the roulette.

But Grossman-Tasker explained that the proposed legislation will not give the Tuscarawas County the opportunity to have casino gambling. But the remaining hope lies in the American Indian tribes.

Tuscarawas County might allow the American Indians to get a chance at its rich ancestral lands. If the Delaware decide to imitate the Eastern Shawnee, who seeks to regain the acres of land Ohio took from them during the 1830's. If this happens, there is a slight chance that Tuscarawas County can feel the heart beating experience the casino brings.

Though as of the moment none of the Delaware tribes actually run casinos but the possibility is endless. If the lawsuit filed in Toledo by the Shawnee wins, the former Republic steel mill will have a total makeover into a super casino resort.

The Treaty of Greenville which formed the angled county dotted line shared with the Stark County is still in effect. This treaty does not allow the Native Americans to claim ancestral lands. So, at the moment, if nothing dramatic change will happen, the only game that the Tuscarawas will enjoy is the Ohio lottery.
