$50 Million Upgrade of Treasure Island Casino Begins

On May 22, 2007, the ground is ready to break for the $50 million worth expansion plans of the Treasure Island Resort and Casino, a gaming and resort property in Welch, Minnesota.

The property is about an hour outside of Minneapolis. The operator and manager of the gambling casino, the Prairie Island Indian Community, plans to start the actual construction on June 1, 2007 with the 2 hotel buildings and 2 entertainment areas on the agenda.

The casino's latest upgrade is a $34 million project for a 200,000 sq ft addition, 70,000 sq ft office space and a 60,000 sq ft warehouse. A marina is also part of the upgrade.

The $50 million renovation will add 230 hotel rooms, a 30,000 sq ft event facility with a 2,800 seat showroom and a family oriented activity center. The hotel rooms will be connected with a sky bridge. The expansion is expected to be completed in the fall of 2008.

The RSP architects are behind the expansion. Treasure Island Marketing Director, Bryan Prettyman, said that for the last 2 years, they have achieved a 98% occupancy rate.

The expansion of the casino facilities seems to be an ongoing trend as several development projects have been started in the last few months.

The Mohegan Sun at the Pocono Downs in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania started their construction for their casino earlier this month. The tribe is expected to spend a total of $180 million.

Aside from that, the Coachella, California's Spotlight 29 Casino, broke ground for the construction of their $100 million casino project which will create a hotel, health spa and a 4 story parking lot.
