19-Year-Olds Can Now Play at Kewadin Starting This November

Starting this first day of November, Kewadin casinos will lower its gaming age limit to 19 at the Hessel, Manistique, Christmas and St. Ignace casino locations.

According to Tony Goetz, Kewadin Casinos chief operating officer, allowing 19 - 20 year-olds to game at these properties is a business decision that will allow them to be consistent with other Michigan tribal casinos giving all adults access to their gaming properties thus helping to keep them competitive in the state's gaming industry. It also protects their two percent payments to local communities.

The tribal gaming compact said that the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, owners of the Kewadin Casino properties, has with the state of Michigan allows the casino to lower its gaming age limit as low as 18 at any time.

Eight of Michigan's tribal casinos currently allow legal adults to gamble at their reservation casinos, all having a podium located at each entrance where identification will be checked, customers under the age of 21 will be identified and issued a wrist band that they will be required to wear during their stay at the casino.

To track individuals that are under the age of 21, Security will also maintain a log. Additional procedures have also been implemented to stop underage drinking.

Five casinos in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, Manistique, Christmas and Hessel are operated by Kewadin Casinos employing approximately 1,200 workers. They are owned and operated by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
