11 Indicted in US for Online Gambling Operation

In attempt to crackdown on online gambling operation in the US, eleven individuals habe been charged with illegally taking bets in the US, racketeering and for not paying more than three billion dollars in US taxes from the wagers to the United States.

The eleven charged are from BetonSports, a sports betting site, whose operation is based on Britain, Antigua and elsewhere.

The two key people in the indictment are BetOnSports founder Gary Kaplan and BetOnSports CEO David Carruthers.

Kaplan, a US resident, was arrested in 1992 for taking illegal sports bets and he later transfer his gambling operations to Aruba and Antigua, but he presently resides in Costa Rica. A warrant of arrest was issued for him.

Meanwhile, Carruthers was taken into custody in Texas last Sunday.

Also indicted were Kaplans sister, Lori Kaplan Multz, and brother, Neil Kaplan.

Other charged were Tim Brown, Peter Wilson and Norman Steinberg, all were from BetOnSports.com; and four other individuals from the Lenis companies that provides betting services to the online site: William Luis Lenis, William Hernan Lenis, Manny Gustavo Lenis and Monica Lenis.

The United States Justice Department said that online gambling is illegal and they will seek extradition of the defendants for proper prosecution.

The crackdown highlights the move of the US to ban online sports wagering and online gambling.
