Slot machines have a vivid and diverse history. Throughout the years, designs and implementation of slot machines went from mechanical to electronic, and from electronic to digital, then from digital to purely software, but the principles are still the same: the slot machine has reels which spin and, if the pre-defined winning combination plays out, you win. Basically, you just put in the coins and wait to find out whether you won or not.
Basically, slot machines are all the same. They have different odds (and of course payouts), different payoffs, different symbols and different exterior arrangement, but there's little difference under the hood. There are so many varying designs around the classic slot machine that everyone could probably find their own ultimate preferred flavour.
Two most distinct types of slot machines are single line and multiline slots. In single line slots, the machine has just one line of reels, usually with 4 or 5 wheels, while in multiline there is a number of reel lines. Multiline slots are a little bit more complicated because winning combinations may play out across a number of lines; when you win, the machine will draw you how the symbols combine together and calculate the win automatically. Sometimes you don't win anything at all, and sometimes multiple combinations award you with relatively big winning money. There are machines with paylines; that is, vertical lines along which a winning combination must occur, but some dont have them, as the winning combination may come in diagonals, zigzags, strange curves and in other ways and fashions.
Another interesting variation of the slot machine is a jackpot. In jackpot games, the slot machines accumulate a fraction of every wagered bet into a virtual pot. As the players wager, the jackpot grows and grows, sometimes crossing hundreds of thousands of dollars. A certain winning combination hits the jackpot, and the lucky gambler collects everything that the ones before him left behind. Jackpot machines are well revered in the gambler community: who wouldn't want to dare the luck for a few pennies and a chance to win enough to buy a new car or a house?
Slot machines are historically played with coins. Online casino slot machines are no exception to that rule, even though bets might differ slightly. Indeed, as well as with all small wager games, there are top bets - they're known as table limits in table games. Unlike the table games, slot machines don't involve any decision on the player's part and so aren't threatened by game management systems because of their fixed odds; the bet limits are more of a traditional thing than anything else.
Software slot machines (as well as the digital ones) are equipped wth a random number generator which is what actually plays the game. Even in the electronic slot machines, the reels dont rotate randomly all by themselves; the random number generator produces the result of the game at once and it is then presented to the player on the reels. This methodics allows very fair and precise balancing without actually hurting neither the players' interests nor the casino revenue.
Contrary to popular opinion, slot machines are actually preprogrammed for a certain payout ratio. However, in the slots world, the gamblers don't use the word "payout" and refer to the payout percentage as "hold" instead. While payout is the percentage of wager returned to the players across the game, hold is exactly the opposite: the percentage of wagers that stay in the machine across its lifetime. As well as any other odds, of course, hold is subject to the law of large numbers (that is, the theoretical calculations are valid on a large scale but if, say, a machine has a 3% hold it doesn't mean that it will literally return 97 dollars to the players within 100 games $1 each). In real world casinos, hold ratios are strictly monitored by the regulating bodies and are inspected; same with the online casinos, but the inspections are taken by independent audit firms and player communities. On average, the hold varies between 2% and 10%, depending on the odds and the betting range of the machine. Calculating a feasible hold percentage for a particular game is an involved task and online casinos are rumoured to not ordinarily deal with it; many software gaming platforms simple don't present the casino owners with means of messing around with the random number generator.
Despite of this apparently terrifying description, slot machines aren't all that bad. First and foremost, they require absolutely no gambling skill to operate. Slot machines are as simple as it gets, you just make a bet and let the reels spin. Depending on the combination you get different payouts. Slot machines also never involve interaction with another player or a dealer, so they might be very attractive to the gamblers who don't wish to hang out with other people. Second, slot machine odds and payoffs are pretty high to the player and, in common, can beat the regular blackjack or roulette games.
Just like the rest of cleverly designed casino software, online slot machines can not be manipulated in any way or fashion. The games don't actually occur in the gambler's computer but on the server of the online casino which is always well secured and heavily guarded. Don't let the Internet scammers fool you: there's no sure way to beat the machines, there's no system, no strategy or software that can help you or improve your chances in the game. Whenever you see an advertising claiming that they can sell you a "crack" or a "patch" or a "modification" to the casino software, ask yourself: if this works as well as they claim, why would the alleged champions of online casinos want to sell it to you instead of making money on their own? Don't try to crack the casino software. All you can get out of it is the casino spotting you attempting to make unauthorized changes and forfeit your wins or, even worse, arrest or terminate your account. It is technically impossible to artificially (and maliciously) influence the slot machine games without having access to the game servers. For some odd reason, though, people still keep trying.
Slot machines are the best way to enter the gambling world. For your first challenge against the luck, we definitely suggest you to start playing on slot machines with fun money.
