Schleswig-Holstein Wants United Online Gambling Treaty In Germany

It has recently been revealed that the Parliament of Schleswig-Holstein has passed its online gambling bill.  That said, although the German state of Schleswig-Holstein received approval from the European Commission for its draft online gambling law, the state would rather join a united online gambling treaty with their fellow German states.

Despite the passing of the bill, not all forms of gambling have been allowed under the new gambling law. What has been permitted is poker, sports books, betting exchanges and all online casino games with the exception of blackjack, baccarat and roulette.  This legislation will pass into law starting January 1, 2012.  Beginning on March 1, 2012 licenses will be issued, and there will be no restrictions on the amount of licenses that can be issued.  All products will be subject to a 20% gross profits tax that will be earned by the state.

One online gambling operator that has a large stake in the German internet gaming market and would like to see Germany have a regulated market is Betfair.  Betfair has every intention of purchasing a license in Schleswig-Holstein and welcomes the state’s law.  It is Betfair’s hope that the country’s other states will follow suit.  Other gambling operators also intending to obtain licenses when they are made available next year include Bwin.party and the Kiel based Jaxx.

For now, Schleswig-Holstein can only hope for a unified online gambling treaty in Germany.  Only time will tell if the other German states will be persuaded to open up their internet gambling markets on terms that are deemed more acceptable than those that they have proposed at present.
