The issue of the legalization of online gambling gained support in the United States. Bills related to this matter have been pending since a long time. A prominent newspaper of the country spoke in its favor, in the editorial section.
The HR 2334 bill was re-introduced in June, 2011. Jim Moran, the Democrat Representative is behind this bill’s launch. The bill is on Comprehensive Problem Gambling, and was brought out in the previous Congress session as well. NCPG (National Council on Problem Gambling), issued a statement asking Congress to extend support towards legalizing online gambling in the country. The bill also has provisions for the Mental Health Service Organization and Substance Abuse to look into the cases related to problem gambling. Joe Barton, the Texas Republican introduced the bill, HR 2366 in June 2011. The bill was launched in the House of Representatives and dealt solely with poker.
HR 2366 falls under the Energy and Commerce Committee’s jurisdiction. John Campbell, a republican, and democrats like Steve Cohen, Shelley Berkley and Barney Frank cosponsored the bill during its launch. Barton chairs the same. Since, the time of its launch, the cosponsors of HR 2366 kept increasing. Last week 5 more persons showed interests to cosponsor. They are Howard Berman, Jim Himes, Peter Welch and John Larson. Although introduced by a republican, the bill has only six of its cosponsors from the party. The rest are democrats.
The latest news paper to speak in favor of legalizing online gambling is the New York Observer. It says that with online gambling legalization, the problem of revenue deficits in the country can be solved. The article also said, that Americans will continue to gamble online irrespective of whether it is legalized or not.
